Process of getting more interviews…

The varsity girls’ basketball team exceeds their expectations with an undefeatable start. With a current record of six wins and no losses, the girls have proved that…

(info./quotes from coach Shaw)

One of the things that have contributed to the team’s success this season so far is how hard they practice. These team members spend every day of the week besides Sunday practicing, aside from game days, focusing mainly on conditioning drills, shooting, building strength and understanding the concept of basketball.

Point guard, senior Jessica Barrios, managed to achieve a total of 53 points, 15 assists and 14 steals in just two games, leading the Hi Tides to two victories. According to Barrios, these games were very emotional due to her friend opponents on the opposing teams. With this superior accomplishment, the Miami Herald considered Barrios “Athlete of the Week”.

“During the game I had no idea I scored so much,” explained Barrios. “I was just doing whatever I needed to do in that moment.”

With high expectations for the remainder of the season and a strong aspiration of playing college basketball, Barrios stays in the gym after a two and a half hour practice to improve her techniques and skills.

“This year I expect to collectively win as much games as possible,” shared Barrios. “I hope to contribute as much to my team as possible and just to have fun.”

Reflection

Being apart of the Beachcomber I had a responsibility to produce a presentation for a specific business, mine being Ariston, a Greek restaurant, with the intentions of selling an advertisement for the newspaper. The process of producing the presentation was time consuming but easy. The most difficult part for me, I think, will be actually going to the restaurant to give the presentation but I do feel prepared and have everything planned out as to what I am saying and what I should bring with me. I am planning to go sometime next week. I think this assignment is very important, considering that the newspaper needs advertisements to not only make it look good but also for the money. Being involved in selling advertisements to local businesses helps me get involved with the Beachcomber in a different way than just writing articles. I feel that the time spent in class going over the Do’s and Don’t, collecting data together and the other things focused solely on the business presentations for advertisements was very useful and helped me learn what to do and how to do it.

Final Fall Sports

FALL SPORTS By: Brittany and Jessica Waserstein

The 2009-2010 school year has just begun and that can only mean one thing…fall sports. The Beach High sport teams are looking forward to the new season as the coaches and athletes have been working hard, highly motivated to qualify for district, regional, and ultimately state competition.

The cross country team, coached by David Reese and Pedro Rivera, is practicing diligently in order to accomplish their goals of qualifying for states.

“I believe we will make it to Regionals as a team,” Reese said. “We might also have individual success in Regionals and state competition.”

They are more motivated and determined than ever, practicing every day. Rachel Grosz, senior captain, believes this year is going to be better than last year due to the new multitude of atleast twenty runners.

“I want to be able to qualify for states,” said Grosz. “But more importantly I expect the team to qualify for regionals.”

Currently, the girls’ team is 5-12.

The Girls’ Beach High swimming team, coached by Sunday Lewandowski, stared off the season strong with a record of 7-0.

“I expect them to win finals at States,” said Lewandowski. “Along the way I expect them to win GMACs and district championships.”

The Boys’ team coached by Charles Pilamunga is succeeding as well posting a 5-1-1 record.

Practicing weeklong, the boys’ and girls’ teams strive to return to Regionals and States.

The diving team, also coached by Lewandowski, is anchored by standout senior, Hunter Beccerra. Last year, Beccerra was the gold medal winner at States last season and won second place in Nationals over the summer. He also represents the U.S. diving team in international competitions.

The Beach High football team has high expectations after a win in their first exhibition game against Mater Academy. “When we won our first game, I felt like crying because I really pushed myself to the limit,” Deron Del Valle, senior, said. “All the hard work paid off.”

With a record of 2-2, the Hi Tides are even more motivated, practicing Mondays through Saturdays. Head Coach, Ralph Jimenez improved the team to three wins last season and is on pace to surpass that this year.

One team that has had its share of success is the golf team, under Coach Michael Perez. After making it to Districts and Regionals the past two seasons, the team looks to make it a third with a 5-3 record so far this year.

“This year we have a better team,” Daniel Peterson, senior, said. “We also have a tougher schedule in order to prepare us for success.”

The bowling team is coached by Alberto Muhtar and Peter Kraus. Last year, the girls finished undefeated and placed second at districts. “We will win districts this year and go to states,” Kraus declared, keeping his expectations elevated.

The boys’ team is struggling to find enough bowlers but Muhtar is optimistic that will change.

Coached by Sonia Ambrose, Paul Rehage and assistant Rembo Li, the Volleyball team is looking to repeat last season’s achievements, where they placed third at Districts. This season they are 3-5.

“The coaches expect to win districts under the leadership of senior, Alexandra Camps,” said Rehage.

Alexandra Melody Camps, senior captain, puts the team’s recent struggles with the new makeup of the team. Not all is lost however as they can still qualify for districts.

“It’s all about everyone’s attitude, focus, and confidant level,” said Camps.

The Miami Beach Senior High sport teams are looking forward to the 2009 fall season. All of the coaches and teammates have been working hard, highly motivated to qualify for regionals or states.

The Beach High Cross Country Team, coached by David Reese and Pedro Rivera, are practicing diligently in order to accomplish their goals of qualifying for states. They are more motivated and determined than ever, practicing every day for two hours; they run around 25 to 30 miles a week and have workouts focused on increasing their speed by being timed while running for 3.1 miles. Rachel Grosz, senior captain, thinks that this year is going to be better than last year because the team has more girls and a multitude of people to encourage one another.

The Girl’s Beach High swimming team coached by Sunday Lewandowski stared off the season strong, winning their first game against Coral Gables Senior High, while the boy’s team coached by Charles Pilamunga lost their first game. Practicing on Mondays through Fridays from 3:00 to 5:30, these Hi Tides do sprints and long distance swimming to build endurance, striving to make it to regionals and states as they did last year.

The Beach High football team started off the season with their heads high and expectations of having a great season. With a record of 2-2, the Hi Tides are even more motivated, practicing Mondays through Saturdays in the back field of the school from 3 to 7 pm. The teammates run through plays and drills, stretch, work on their coordination and do conditioning as instructed by their coach, Ken Spiegelman. The hopes of doing better and being competitive in the district is very important, according to Spiegelman. Players from the JV football team joined this year’s team along with other new members, providing a team with a mixture of upper classman and under classman.

“When we won our first game, I felt like crying because I really pushed myself to the limit,” Deron Del Valle, Senior with jersey number 30 said. “All the hard work paid off.”

With a record of 5 wins and 3 losses, The Hi-Tide coach of the golf team, Mr. Michael Perez, had higher expectations at the beginning of the year but acknowledges that him and his team will need to be overachievers in order to achieve their goals. Since last year they tied second place for districts and made it to regionals, they expect to make it to the playoffs but have an ultimate goal of making it to the state finals. Practice is on Mondays through Thursdays from 3-6:30. They work on their short game and also hit tons of golf balls at the driving range. The team’s starting five is made up of two seniors, David Reinfeld and Daniel Peterson, one junior, Nicolo Shiekman, one sophomore, Kyle McLaughlin and a transfer student from Finland, Niki Luhtanen.

“This year we have a better team,” Peterson said. “But we also have a tougher schedule in order to better prepare us for a greater success.”

The bowling team is coached by Alberto Muhtar and Peter Kraus. Last year, the girl’s team was undefeated, winning second place in districts. Peter Kraus declared that “we will win districts this year and go to states in Orlando.” The boys are having problems getting together enough players and because of this they lost their first game. However, Muhtar claims that this will change. With practices on Mondays and Thursdays at Lucky Strike, both coaches are expecting for their teams to do the best they can.
